I was Strategic Adviser to Surrey Heath Borough Council’s Camberley Town Centre Regeneration Board in 2011/12.
Lying within the economically buoyant Blackwater Valley and part of the M3/M4 corridor, this sub-region has outperformed regional averages, with strong rates of new business formation, above average skill levels, and high average wages.
It is strongly represented in the knowledge based sector (Sun Microsystems, EDS and Nokia) and high-end manufacturing: aerospace, McLaren super cars, etc. It has a generally affluent population with above average incomes and proportions of the A and B social group (40%, against a national average of 25% – 2001 Census).
Camberley’s USP is a great retail offer, within an exceptionally nice area to live and bring up children. The regeneration of the town centre is to keep it at the forefront of Surrey for both business and private investors.
Surrey Heath is out to consultation on an ambitious Area Action Plan for the town which seeks to achieve some 40,000 square metres of new retail space, and over 200 new homes.
